CE by numbers

7000 carats (or over) is the size of the world's largest diamond crystal which was discovered in South Africa. Reuter's have reported however that this almost perfect crystal is a fake - difficult to prove as the finders have not yet come forth with the stone!

The diamond was discovered by a real estate developer and a photograph of the gem shows a blue-green stone that is a perfect diamond crystal. When held against a grindwheel it apparently didn't mark. If it is indeed a diamond it will be the find of the diamond industry.

Its runner up (which definitely exists) is the Cullinan diamond or the "Star of Africa" at 3,106 carats; the size of your fist. This stone was cut up into several smaller stones, and are presently found within the English Crown Jewels.

Lovelinks bracelets half price offer

Lovelinks bracelets half price offer

It’s true we will be selling our lovelinks starter bracelets at half price from 27th July for a limited period. For those who are unfamiliar with lovelinks, they are the modern day version of the old fashioned charm bracelet. Usually people buy a bracelet with a few links and then have more added over time. The links make ideal gifts for anniversaries and birthdays and can be chosen to have a special significance to their owner. Each individual link is handmade from Sterling silver, some are decorated with 14 ct gold, or with stones others are made from genuine Italian Murano glass.

Covered in jewels, but is your jewellery covered?

Sadly from time to time jewellery gets stolen, lost or damaged so it makes sense to have your jewellery insured. Did you know?

  • Any jewellery bought from Ce’ the Jeweller can be insured at our shop at the time of purchasing.
  • If you’ve bought any jewellery from us you can also return to us and insure it at a later date.

Isn’t jewellery covered by household insurance?

In theory this can be the case, but there are advantages to insuring jewellery separately:

  • We have all the information about the jewellery item to hand.
  • You won’t lose your no-claims bonus on your household cover.

The insurance is provided by TH March and cover can cost as little as £6.56 for three years (on an item costing less than £100).

Worth thinking about…?

Buying jewellery abroad

Buying jewellery abroad

If you are having a lovely holiday it is always tempting buy a keepsake to take home and remind you of happy times, what can be more tempting than an item of jewellery especially if the holiday is a honeymoon or anniversary celebration?

Our advice is that you tread very carefully before you purchase any jewellery abroad making sure you take the following points into consideration.

  • All holiday destinations know you are looking for a bargain and that you expect the jewellery to be cheaper abroad.
  • Don’t just look at the item as a whole; inspect its settings and how well made it is.
  • It may be "stamped" 750 or 18k, this doesn’t mean it would pass the UK hallmarking standards for gold or platinum.
  • You may be given a Gem report but is this issued by a recognised laboratory or just written by the shop on their own "Certificate" paper?
  • How easy is it to return the item if you have a problem?
  • Do you really trust the people you are buying from?

If you are unsure on any of the points mentioned our advice would be not to make the purchase. We are asked to repair many poorly made pieces of jewellery purchased abroad. Sometimes the jewellery is so badly made it is beyond repair, even though it may only be weeks old. We have seen items where diamonds have fallen out after just one week. When inspecting the rest of the settings it is plain to see why but not something the untrained purchaser would easily recognize.

Loose diamonds and gems are a minefield for the uninitiated, trust the people you are buying from. And don’t forget the salesman knows you probably won’t ever come back. If you would like some advice on buying abroad please feel free to pop in and see us.

Anyone for tennis?

Anyone for tennis?

Ce’ the Jeweller is sponsoring Bishop’s Stortford Tennis Club for a year. So what is the connection between Ce’ and tennis? Well like any good player we aim to give the best possible service and both tennis and jewellery are associated with the word love! Seriously we are delighted to be giving our support to a worthwhile local sports association.
